Lovers Under An Umbrella In The Snow by Suzuki Harunobu, 1766

3 Short Poems From 9th Century Japan

By Ono No Komachi

You do not come
On this moonless night.
I wake wanting you.
My breasts heave and blaze.
My heart burns up.
Although I come to you constantly
over the roads of dreams,
those nights of love
are not worth one waking touch of you.
Doesn't he realize
that I am not
like the swaying kelp
in the surf,
where the seaweed gatherer
can come as often as he wants.

Ono no Komachi (c.825 - 900 A.D.) was a famous Japanese Waka poet, in the early Heian period. She was noted as a rare beauty; Komachi is a symbol of a beautiful woman in Japan. She is also numbered as one of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals.
